What is a transponder key?

Transponder keys were first introduced as a means to put an end to car theft. The transponder key or chip key as it is also commonly know works by using a code embedded in  the key, when the key is turned in the ignition a code on the key is read and then the ignition will start. If the code does not match up the ignition cannot start.

Lost transponder car keys can be replaced by professional auto locksmiths. This is usually done by cloning the original key. This can be achieved by using the serial key number in the drivers manual to copy the key exactly.

A professional locksmith will be able to clone the transponder key and reproduce a key fob that will activate the central locking or the car.

It is also worth taking note that some transponder keys can only be duplicated if the correct authorization is granted.

If your car keys have printed on them “do not duplicate” or “do not copy “ you will need to show before you try to duplicate your transponder key that you are the owner and that you have the correct key codes for duplication.

If a locksmith company agrees to duplicate keys for you without the proper authorization then this company is breaking the law.

You should not use any lock smith company that does not follow standard regulations. After all you don’t want to trust your cars security to just anybody.

Taking care that you don’t lose you transponder key is one of the best thing you can do to ensure the security of your car. Responsibility today can save you time and money tomorrow.
